THIRD SCOTTISH GATHERING – EDINBURGH FESTIVAL THEATRE
14th JUNE 2017
More than 60 people from the DEEP network and other interested groups met together on 14th June 2017 at the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. Following our Gatherings in Hawick and Inverness, this was the third event of the year funded directly by The Life Changes Trust. We are also really grateful to Paul Hudson and his team at the Festival Theatre for providing such fantastic resources and space. Such generosity helped people from all over Scotland and beyond to enjoy an inspiring and uplifting time together.
It was, as ever, a real privilege to enjoy the company of so many people, and to hear so many voices inform our discussions and make decisions. One of the priorities of DEEP this year is to ensure that decision making rests with the network, and we achieved this in Edinburgh (more news in the next Update). We also built on previous themes and deepened our discussions together, as well as sharing laughter, kindness and so many magic moments and connections.
At the end of the Gathering we could summarise our main themes as:
- Information and Understanding
- Sharing Culture and Creativity
- The Right to do normal things, the things we want to do
- Keeping our relationships going
- Gathering together / People meeting People / Ending Loneliness
These were the themes which people felt were most important to them, and we were able to make some important decisions together about how to move these ideas forward and where to allocate some funds. People who had attended the earlier Gatherings, from as far afield as South Uist and the Borders, also came to Edinburgh and were proud to be able to say that ideas from those Gatherings had already been transformed into action, with ALUMNI’s “Self-Management” project and Arora and East Lothian’s “Digital Dining” projects already winning funding.
We were also really privileged to welcome the SEWA group from Derby, who shared their insight and Asian Culture with us so generously. Our Gathering included a wonderful performance of their song. We learned from them that in Sanskrit the word “DEEP” means We were also really privileged to welcome the SEWA group from Derby, who shared their insight and Asian Culture with us so generously. We have so many pictures and videos (thanks to Christeen, Amy, James, Philly and Ali) and so many notes and contributions that it is going to take a wee while longer to put together our final report and a short film of our Gatherings. Fingers crossed that all will be ready for the next Update. Once again, sincere thanks to all who took part and helped on the day. Here is a picture of most of us!!!
